Depression can range from a prolonged but mildly depressed mood to a debilitating inability even to get out of bed, yet alone deal with the demands of daily life. Relationships suffer, self esteem plummets and even the simplest tasks become insurmountable. Many people continue in jobs or everyday activities, masking their pain whilst self-medicating through increased alcohol and nicotine use or anaethetising their pain through overwork so that they become too busy to address how unhappy they are.
Unless the underlying causes of ‘your’ depression are established and treated, reducing the symptoms only avoids recovery and might even exacerbate the situation. It is hard to see the positive in depression; yet many clients work effectivelythrough their depression, and say ‘Depression was one of the best things that happened to me’ since it gave them the final impetus to address things in their lives that were not working and which, without the debilitating effect of depression, would never have been addressed and rectified.
