Finding a Psychologist in Sydney

Finding a psychologist that you not only feel comfortable with but who make a real and positive impact in your life, can be challenging.  How do you choose from the hundreds of therapist and psychology websites that result when you type this question into Google?

Most clients believe that psychologists deal with emotional and challenging problems, so typing in something about your symptoms, your age and gender is often the first things you do.  Then, as hundreds of name and websites results, saying what ailments they treat – stress, depression, anxiety, burnout, relationship difficulties etc, you may narrow your search by location or whether you would prefer a man or a woman.

However, how do you chose between the relative merits of psychologists when they all seem to be offering similar assistance? Don’t they all try to help you get unstuck?

Regardless of what intervention a psychologist uses, they will use their relationship with you to assist you with more constructive way of looking at things, approaching problems and exploring options.  This will rely heavily on the quality of your relationship with them.  You have to feel the person really cares about helping you and has your best interests at heart.  It is only under conditions of trust that you will feel comfortable to share information with them – maybe things that you have hardly omitted to yourself, yet alone others.  Keep this in mind when you read the profiles of psychologists.

Their training and experience is important – more important is some common ground on what you think about the human condition and whether life’s challenges are things to avoid or opportunities to create a more meaningful and enjoyable life.
